In recent versions of PostGIS, geometry_columns is a view, so you
do not need to worry about that. The spatial_ref_sys table should
already have a primary key on srid. What version of PostGIS are you using?

If an older one, then yes, your best option is to add primary keys:
make srid a primary key for spatial_ref_sys, and the the geometry_columns
table will need one spanning the catalog, schema, table, and 'column' columns.
