I always find it easier to just use the -p option when starting slony.
IE:
slon -d1 -pslon_node_1.pid $SLONY_SCHEMA_NAME "dbname=$MASTERDBNAME user=$REPLICATIONUSER host=$MASTERHOST port=$PGPORT" > slon1.log &
That way the pid is always correct.
