But, for arguments sake, trying 1.2 with 

export PREFIX=/opt/dbs/pgsql8110-slony115-AIX5300-05-00-64bit-2007-09-26
 LDFLAGS="-Wl,-bbigtoc" CC="gcc -maix64" ./configure --with-pgconfigdir=
$PREFIX/bin        
 
Results in the same error.
