I dimly remember having a case where an AFTER trigger took a period of time after it did its work to return. This had something to do with lousy statistics on one of the target tables. Is everything vacuumed and analysed? And are you perfectly sure that this really is a Slony issue, and not just coincidence? In any case, a full EXPLAIN ANALYSE session from psql with the \timing setting on would probably help show everything in question.
