[Steve was asking about this; I'll bounce it to the list...] Task #1219 is "Summary: Add option to slon_kill.pl to only kill watchdogs" A feature that I have discovered would be useful is that of being able to choose between: a) Killing off watchdogs b) Killing off slons At present, slon_kill.pl kills them all, which is not necessarily optimal. In particular, I find a use case for just killing off watchdogs: We have a server (happily not a primary one) that has been falling over. When that has happened, I got called to restart slons :-(. The thought: - Set up a job every so often [in this case, every 15 minutes] which uses slon_kill.pl to just kill off the watchdogs - If the server falls over, this cron job will restart the watchdogs which will in turn restart slons - If the server _doesn't_ fall over, watchdogs may periodically get replaced by other watchdogs, but they don't bother interrupting slons that are running happily. (Don't provoke the elephant if you don't need to :-)) I have "hacked" a change into place locally, but it would be nice to have a nice, clean "--watchdogs-only" or "--slons-only" option in version 1.1. I haven't got a comparable "use case" for a "--slons-only" option; it just seems orthogonal, and orthogonality always seems right :-). -- "cbbrowne","@","ca.afilias.info" <http://dev6.int.libertyrms.com/> Christopher Browne (416) 673-4124 (land)
