That should be a low-impact change; it certainly oughtn't break the
engine.  I think the person who will be affected most by any side-effects
of this will be Devrim Gunduz.

I'd suggest proposing a patch, sooner than later.  If it causes a lot of
anxiety, we may not be able to take it on, but if it isn't overly
controversial...

I expect that there is a greater risk that this would have painful
side-effects, as changes to the buildsystem affect everyone doing
packaging.  Again, Devrim is probably the one most directly affected, so
if he gets anxious about a proposed patch, that would be the source of the
go/no-go...
