A few weeks ago I sent modified sources of a slon deamon to Darcy an Jan,
that was able to skip the initial delete/copy during subscription. With
that option it is possible, to use pg_dump to copy the data afap to the
slave and start replicating only the changes.
@Jan/Darcy: any decisions to use it or not ?

I think there's been some additional discussion about how people
might want to work around this, but nobody's figured out how to do it
perfectly.
