No, you don't NEED pgbench installed for replication to work.

pgbench happens to be a convenient "test bed" to use, so it's typical for
samples and tests to refer to it.

In that there is a bit of a learning curve in figuring out how to use
Slony-I, it may be worth trying out one of the documented examples using
pgbench before striking out into new territory by testing it out on your
own data.
