The reason why is that large object access does not have the ability to fire triggers. Writing wrappers around the LO access functions would not work because in older client protocol versions these access functions are called by their OID, known to the client library and via the lesser well known fastpath call mechanism. If you know a way to capture large object access in a transparent way, I would be all ears.
